How to Size a Living Room Rug

Are you in the market for a rug for your living room but don’t know how to size it? Learn how in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:

Ideally you want all of the furniture to fit on the rug. For most people that means an 8′ x 10′ or possibly a 5′ x 8′ rug.

If that doesn’t work for you, there are other things you can do. Tt’s perfectly OK for just the front legs of all the seating furniture to fit on the rug, so you can go with a smaller rug. Another solution is to choose a larger, less expensive rug such as a seisel and then put a smaller, more decorative colorful rug on top of that. The seating arrangement will still be grounded on the larger rug so it will still look correct and deliberate.

Always use a rug pad to ensure the rug will not slip around and make it feel cushier.

Never run a rug all the way up to the wall. Leave a border of about 8-12 inches of floor between the end of the rug and the beginning of the wall.
