How to Build a Platform Bed With Storage
A platform bed adds lots of storage and eliminates the need for a box spring. Why buy when you can build? Learn how to build a platform bed with storage in this Lowe’s video:
This popular platform bed breaks down into a few simple assemblies. Get the tools and materials list, detailed instructions, and twin/full and queen/king project and cutting diagrams for this DIY project here.
You’ll build two side cases for the platform bed. Each consists of a base, a top, a series of dividers and a backer. Add the veneer to the edges that will be visible. When you attach each divider, just drive one screw and check for square before driving the rest of the screws. Attach the rest of the dividers that way, then glue and screw the top piece to the dividers. When you attach the back, don’t glue it, just use screws so you can remove it when you apply the finish to the inside of the case. The end case is assembled just like the sides.
The headboard is a really basic assembly. Attach the stiles and the rail to the headboard panel using glue and screws and then veneer the visible edges.
Now you can put all the pieces together. Add the rails to the side cases, then add the supports to the backside of the cases. Lay out all three cases and attach the final rail to the end case at the foot of the bed. Now you can put the headboard in place and attach it using the connector bolts and nuts. If your bed size calls for support slats, put those in place, then add the platform.
Add your mattress and linens for a fabulous contemporary bed that provides plenty of storage too!
