Three Decorating Ideas for a Non-Working Fireplace

Wondering how to disguise that big black hole in a fireplace that doesn’t work? This video by Better Homes and Gardens presents three ideas for decorating a non-working fireplace.

Here are three easy solutions to take your non-working fireplace from eyesore to focal point:

1. Plant: Get a large plant big enough to fill out the firebox and even extend above it a little bit. Anchor it in a woven basket or a pretty pot.

2. Artwork: Lean a piece of framed artwork such as a painting or photograph against the back of the firebox for an unexpected look. A black and white photograph works great, but choose a landscape or an abstract rather than a people photo. The frame should fill out most of the firebox.

3. Candles: Buy white pillar candles or three-wick candles and get them going in layers in your firebox. Put one layer on the bottom of the firebox and another on the tray that holds the logs and place tall pillar candles behind them. You will get the beautiful warm glow of the fireplace – and it’s easy maintenance too. And if you get scented candles, your room will smell amazing.
