How to Accurately Measure For New Tile Flooring
Thinking about re-tiling your kitchen floor but are uncertain how much tile you’ll need? Learn how to accurately measure for new tile flooring in this video by The Home Depot:
Look at your floor as a rectangle with long and wide sides. The area of a rectangle is Length x Width. Make your calculations in feet.
Be sure to add the square footage of any adjacent areas you’ll be tiling, such as the dining room, pantry, laundry room, entryway, mudroom, foyer, and breakfast nook, as well as the space under the refrigerator. Make sure you get the total square footage of the floor to be covered.
If you’re purchasing tiles in a box or case, refer to the label for the square feet of tile on the package. Divide your total square footage by the square feet shown on the case to get the number of cases you need to purchase, then add a 10% overage. If you’re planning a diagonal design or making numerous cuts, increase the overage to 25%. Purchase your tile from the same lot to ensure a proper match. If you plan to tile an adjacent area in the future, purchase enough of that tile now with the same batch number for color consistency.
