Big City Style in a Compact Space

When living in a small space, you’re often forced to choose between your personal style and super-efficiency, and the two typically don’t go together. See how these homeowners managed to fit their big-city style into a compact space in this HGTV Remodels video:

Here’s how the homeowners maximized space in this former gunsmith’s shop:

  • Dead space between the kitchen and the stairway was converted into a pantry with sliding doors.
  • Extra thick walls allowed the construction of a combined window seat, storage and a drying rack in the entryway and recessed shelving and a pocket door in the bathroom.
  • In the kitchen, one island has a coffeemaker on a dolly, while the other has a two-burner cooktop and three drawers for cutlery and pots and pans. Additional storage is located above the convection oven. A magnetic strip holds the knives. The back of the fridge is stuffed into an adjacent closet.
  • The bedroom takes up the entire second floor. The raised custom-made bed has room underneath for a hamper nook. A custom-made futon can transform into a double bed or into twin beds.
  • Extended outdoor living space is provided by a rooftop deck.
