Use Stencils to Create Inspirational Wall Art

This inspiring paint project can improve any room. Learn how to use stencils to create inspirational wall art in this Lowe’s video:

For this DIY project, you will need a sharp blade, a cork-backed straight-edge and a mat. Be aware that you will need to do some touch ups as a stencil does not give you a clean reveal like tape does.

When cutting your stencil, change out the blade several times. You need your lines to be straight and level, so pay attention when trimming back the laminate at the top and bottom.

When your stencil is ready, spray the back lightly with repositionable adhesive and let it set up for about 30 seconds. Apply the stencil to the wall using light pressure and always check for level. Mark your starting points on the wall if you’re not starting from a corner.

Use a roller with a foam cover that is rounded at the edges to minimize catching on the stencil edges. Load the roller with paint, getting rid of any excess first before rolling the stencil. Use light pressure to avoid getting paint under the stencil. You may need a few coats to create the coverage you want. Do not roll past the edges of the stencil; use extra tape to create a “safe zone” if needed.

In terms of design, you can apply stencils to the whole wall, stack them in a simple block or in a stripe down the wall, or create a border with individual words. When you finish a block, peel away the stencils, realign them and repeat. Have small bushes on hand for touch ups. To bridge gaps in letters, apply small pieces of painters tape and fill in.
