How to Decode a Paint Chip Display

Challenged by choosing color? Overwhelmed by all of the options? This Lowe’s video presents some easy rules to help you decode a paint chip display:

There is an underlying organization to paint chip displays. Not all brands use the same scheme, but most group color according to temperature, keeping cool colors (blues, turquoises, greens) separate from warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows).

Within these basic zones, you will also see saturation differences. The colors on the outside of the display are cleaner, brighter and crisper. As you move toward the center, the colors become more muted and quieter as more gray is added in. If you’re choosing more than one color, try to stay within the same saturation level, which will make your palette feel more unified.

When working with whites, stay in the same zone that your color came from. The whites displayed alongside the cool colors complement them. Similarly, the whites displayed alongside the warm colors complement them. Keep cool with cool and warm with warm.

Whether you love rich and cozy colors, a soft and serene palette, natural neutrals or pops of color, use these strategies to zero in on a hue that’s right for you.
