How to Plant a Vertical Succulent Garden

An artful display of gorgeous greens could re-frame your whole perspective on gardening. Learn how to build wall frames and plant a vertical succulent garden in this Lowe’s video:

The hanging frame is a basic build consisting of a box that holds the dirt and the frame pieces.

1. Build the box and assemble the frame using brackets to hold the pieces. Attach the box to the frame, again with brackets. Insert a piece of hard wire cloth and finish off the back of the box with a piece of acrylic.

2. Get potting soil specific for succulents or prepare it yourself (two parts soilless potting mix, one part perlite, and one part builder’s or all-purpose sand). This is a dry mix that drains well and is ideal as succulents do not like to sit in water. Fill the frame until the wire fabric cloth is just covered. Sprinkle with water and let stand for 15 minutes. Top it off with another layer of soil and a little more water.

3. Lay out the succulents but don’t overcrowd them as they will spread. Once you have an arrangement you like, trace around the plants with a permanent marker. Using a pair of tin snips, carefully cut through the wire fabric, bending back the pieces to make a hole just large enough to get the root ball through. Leave several wire columns intact around the perimeter and in between the plants.

Once your garden is planted, place it somewhere where it will get appropriate light. Water it several times a week during the growing season. To water, remove the frame from the wall and lay flat.

You now have an arrangement that looks great either hanging outdoors or used as a centerpiece on an outdoor table.
