Affordable Guest Room Makeover

An excess of bold color and busy window treatments made this guest room suitable only for a “crash pad”. Watch how an affordable refresh makes this room bold in a good way in this HGTV video:

The goals of this refresh were to stay on budget and make a big impact.

When painting with bold colors, you need to choose the right shades and the right undertones to set the right mood. The cool blue in this guest room was too saturated and too jarring. A neutral orange is the perfect balance and provides plenty of personality without keeping you up all night. The orange reads “neutral” because the undertones are more beige than red. And of course painting is the least expensive way to make the most impact in any room.

An area rug is a great way to add personality and color to a space. It’s perfectly OK to layer an area rug on top of a carpet.

The original drapes were way too busy and did not complement the overall space. They were replaced with plain white cotton drapes dressed up with ribbon detailing for a tailored look.

A neutral gray duvet balances the warm orange walls and the cool white drapes and adds a touch of sophistication.

A wall-mounted desk adds a multipurpose aspect to any room. It provides a private place for guests to get some work done but also makes the room a mini-home office. Framed pictures, papers and pens, and fresh flowers provide the finishing touch.

The cost breakdown is as follows:

  • Paint: $75
  • Drapes: $50
  • Bedding: $40
  • Desk: $169
  • Accessories: $45
  • Rug: $119

Total cost of this guest room refresh: $498
