How to Build an Under-the-Stairs Recessed Bookshelf
The triangular area under a staircase is typically wasted space. Learn how to utilize this area and build an under-the-stairs recessed bookshelf in this Lowe’s video:
For this DIY project, you will create boxes to fit in between the studs and attach them to the studs using screws, and then use trim along the outside edges to hide the seams.
1. Find the studs, trace out the stud pattern and use that framework to design your bookshelf. Cut out drywall for the boxes using a drywall saw and take measurements to draw up the plans for the boxes.
2. Make three boxes for adjustable shelving which will get smaller as they go to match the descending staircase. You can build them from plywood and attach them together with nails and screws. Make sure to test fit as you go; the fit should be snug but not too tight. You can always add shims for a better fit when you screw things together later.
3. Using a piece of pegboard as your guide, drill holes for shelf pins for the adjustable shelving. Drill only 1/4″ into the side pieces. The shelf pin size will show you what the drill bit size should be. Measure the boxes, cut the shelves to the right size, and test fit with the shelf pins to make sure they fit correctly.
4. Paint the boxes and shelves. Explore wallpaper and paint options as this bookshelf can really change the look of the room.
5. Put the boxes into place. Make sure they’re level, then attach them with screws into the studs.
6. Add trim along the outside edges.
