How to Assemble a Basic DIY Toolkit

While your local home improvement store has thousands of tools to choose from, you only need a few items for almost any upcycling project. Learn how to assemble a basic DIY toolkit in this Buildipedia video:



Your toolkit should have the following items:

  • Paint roller kit
  • Paint brushes – bamboo or recycled brushes are sustainable choices
  • Hot glue gun – use for tacking, finishing and decor – get one with a kickstand so it will not burn your work surface
  • Sanding sponges – come in grades from coarse to fine and in a variety of shapes and sizes
  • Steel wool – use for sanding metal surfaces
  • Staple gun – great tool for reupholstering, making picture frames, and small woodworking projects
  • Quick grip clamps – aid  for sawing or glueing – come in any size
  • Level – a “must have” for hanging art and photos and for any woodworking project
  • Basic hand tools – hammers, screwdrivers, chisels – get ones that feel best in your hands
  • Gloves – basic hand protection
  • Cordless drill –  one in the 12-20 volt range will get you through any upcycling project
  • Drill bits
  • Nuts and bolts – get a kit filled with the most common sizes
