Spruce Up Your Walls With Flooring

A great way to give your walls a modern look is by applying flooring. Learn how to create an accent with laminate flooring material in this video by The Home Depot:

For this DIY project, you will need:

  • Laminate flooring
  • Level
  • Ladder
  • Mallet
  • Liquid Nails with caulking gun
  • Stud finder
  • Nail gun with brad nails
  • Air compressor

1. Measure the wall and purchase your flooring accordingly.

2. Locate the studs using the stud finder. Mark the positions horizontally and vertically with a pencil, creating a reference grid on the wall. Use the level to keep your lines straight.

3. Rack your boards to give you a general idea where they will go. Precise measurements are not needed. Depending on the height of the wall, you may have to cut some of the boards to make them fit. You can decide whether you want the narrower boards closer to the ceiling or closer to the floor.

4. Squirt a thin strip of Liquid Nails in a zigzag pattern onto the back of the first plank. Apply the board to the wall, aligning the edge of the board with the edge of the wall. Tap the board lightly with a mallet. Use a simple 2×4 to tap the areas the mallet can’t reach.

5. Use the nail gun to affix the board securely to the wall. Nail it to the studs through the top of the board at a 45-degree angle.

6. Repeat this process until you fill up the wall. You will have to measure and cut each board to make sure they fit evenly along the wall. Make sure you join the boards with the gap as close to the middle of the parallel boards as possible. Use the mallet to gently tap each new board against the adjoining board. If you do need to make a lengthwise cut when you reach the end, do so carefully.
