Deck Renovation Tips – Installing New Railings and Lattice

Learn how to refresh your deck with new railings and lattice in this Lowe’s video (click here to watch the Part I video on installing new deck posts):

Attach the Railings:

1. Measure the distance between the posts. For rails with pre-cut baluster holes, when marking the rail length, have an equal distance from the end to first hole on each side of the rail and subtract 1/2 ” for the brackets. Place the bottom rail next to the top rail, line up the holes, mark the length, and cut both rails.

2. The railing system can be assembled and installed as one piece using the assembly brackets. They slip on the ends of the rails and attach to the posts with bracket flanges. Typical railing height is 36″ from deck floor. The cross blocks provided with the railing helps set the railing at that height and provides support at the middle of the bottom railing. Use PVC glue to attach and let dry per manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Once the glue has set, put the railings together. The spindles feed in the holes on the bottom and top rails. You can keep the railing together by wrapping bungee cords around it. Slide the end caps on, place the railing between the posts and check for level. Make sure the end caps are centered and lightly trace around them. Remove the rail and take off the end caps. Hold each end cap on its mark, place the bracket flange inside the cap, and mark the screw holes. Drill the holes and attach the flange with screws. Re-attach the end caps on the railing.

4. Hold the railing between the posts above the flanges and press downward to lock the caps in.

Install the Post Caps:

The post caps simply snap into place. You can add solar post caps on the corner posts for accent lighting.

Install Fascia Boards:

Cover up carriage bolts and bolt holes from the old posts by installing a fascia board. Use a board that is several inches narrower than the rim joist. Position the board flush with the top of the decking. Drill holes and attach it with screws. The exposed space below the fascia board is where the lattice can be attached.

Attach the Lattice:

Vinyl lattice was chosen for this deck makeover. Cut the lattice to fit. For added strength and a nicer look, cut framing pieces to fit around it. Attach the lattice with screws made for vinyl lattice:
