How to Install a Flagstone Patio
Installling a stone patio adds a cool “wow” factor to any backyard. Learn the step-by-step process for flagstone patio installation in this DIY Network video:
- After deciding on the size and selecting stones for the patio, excavate the area and prep the base with a 3″ to 4″ layer of compacted gravel, then cover with a layer of coarse sand for proper drainage.
- Place the stones, starting at the perimeter and working inward. Hit stones with a rubber mallet to secure them in place. Check the level after each stone is firmly in.
- Keep the size of the joints uniform for a clean look. Use a chipping hammer to shape stones for consistency. For an added custom touch, keep a few joints open and plant moss in the openings.
- Sweep sand across the top to fill any empty joints, then sweep away the excess.
- Bring in some outdoor furniture and patio accessories.
You now have a great place for cookouts or for just hanging out in your own backyard!
