How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

You don’t need an elaborate garden to enjoy beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables. Consider installing a raised garden bed. All you need are a few materials, a small space and several hours to devote to this simple project. Learn more in this Lowe’s video:

The raised garden bed featured in this video is made from 2’x4’s w/ 4’x4′ posts at the corners. You can build your garden bed out of wood, stone, concrete block. or even just a pile of soil – or you can construct it as part of a deck. Just make sure the container has at least six inches of soil for the plants’ roots to grow. Don’t use treated wood is you are planting vegetables. While standard lumber can be used, cedar is a good choice as it’s not only attractive but also resists decay.

Select a location with plenty of sun that has access to both sides of the bed. Mark the dimensions on the ground and remove the sod. Use a level to check the ground and make adjustments as needed prior to constructing the bed. Roll out landscape fabric over the area, using slightly more than the size of the planting bed.

  1. Cut the boards and posts to length and drill pilot holes near the ends of the 2’x4’s.
  2. Secure 2’x4’s to one 4’x4′ making sure the tops are flush with the posts and even and square on the sides.
  3. Attach 2’x4’s with screws and secure the posts on the other end the same way. Build the same thing for the other side of the box. Add 2’x4’s for the ends.
  4. Set the box in place and make sure it’s level, then cut off the excess landscape fabric.

Now you’re ready to add soil, which you can mix with compost or special fertilizer. Finally, add plants.

You can create a simple irrigation system for your garden bed. A soaker hose will get water to the roots efficiently. Place the hose along the row of plants and cover it with soil. You can add an automatic timer for convenience.
