Designing an Affordable Outdoor Kitchen
Like the idea of an outdoor kitchen but only have a small budget? This Landscaping Network video features a simple, functional – and affordable – outdoor kitchen:
The homeowner did not want to build a large grandiose outdoor kitchen that for the most part doesn’t get used. This outdoor kitchen is functional and is located off to side, so it does not dominate the landscape. It is relatively close to the indoor kitchen, making it easy to bring food in and out.
This outdoor kitchen has a refrigerator but no sink as incorporating plumbing was not feasible. It has a large but modest barbecue and slate countertops.
Incorporating stainless steel appliances, slate and a concrete masonry base makes this outdoor kitchen easy to maintain. Choosing concrete over wood avoids the potential problems of rot and fire damage. Minimal grout joints prevent leaf and water damage. Stainless steel is durable and won’t chip, flake or rust.
As a final tip, while many people want side burners or lots of storage drawers, keep in mind that these tend to become spider hideouts, may not be used that much, and may not be worth the expense.
