Installation of an Acid-Etched Concrete Kitchen Floor

“Concrete kitchen floor” – does that make you think of something cold, dull and ugly? Watch this installation of a beautiful acid-etched concrete floor in this DIY Rock Solid video:

The concrete floor was installed following these steps:

  • Everything was removed from the tile down to the subfloor to get a solid base.
  • Day 1: Applied asphalt felt and a metal lathe to create a surface for the texture pave to adhere to. The texture pave was then mixed, spread over the metal lathe using a gauge rake and magic trowel to get a even depth of 1/4 inch and left to dry overnight.
  • Day 2: Dampened the floor with water using a garden spreader and applied a thin finish skim coat with the magic trowel. The second coat of thin finish was thicker and applied using hand trowels to create texture. Once completely dry, the floor was ready for the acid stain.
  • Acid Etching: The cabinets and walls were covered first. The acid stain was mixed with water and applied at a random pattern to the flooring. Once the floor was the desired color and dry, ammonia was applied followed by water to clean it up. After drying, two coats of water-based sealant was applied and allowed to dry for 24 hours.

The resulting beautiful floor is easily maintained by sweeping and using a damp mop.
