The Value of Good Shower Curtain Liners

Most American homes have either bathtubs with shower heads or shower stalls in one or more bathrooms. We love our showers and that nice steamy water beating down on us. Showers feel cleaner than tub baths to many. Showers of every kind need a way to keep the water in and away from the rest of the bathroom. We have a choice between glass and metal shower doors and shower curtains with liners. For those who choose bathroom shower curtains for the softer look and feel, shower curtain liners are a necessity. Liners are made of some form of waterproof material like vinyl to protect the outer curtain.

Shower curtain liners make it possible to use any fabric we choose for the curtain, knowing the liner will keep the water away. Liners come in several different materials and opacities as well as dozens of colors. Many shower curtain liners are printed or embossed with designs to make them more attractive or amusing from inside the shower. There are children’s patterns and theme designs available. You can choose a color that matches the outer curtain or one that contrasts with it. Some liners are made of a tightly woven synthetic fiber that is waterproof and others are clear.

Whatever fiber or pattern you choose in a shower curtain liner, it needs to protect the outer curtain and keep water in the shower. It also needs to be cleanable and mold resistant. Nothing is more unappetizing then stepping into a shower and seeing blue-green or black mold creeping up the liner in a blotchy mess. You can find liners that have mold retardant in them, and you can find liners you can throw in the washing machine with a little bleach. Some people prefer to buy the $3.99 specials and simply replace them when they get to look bad.

When shopping for shower curtain liners, make sure they are wide and long enough for your shower. You can purchase extra long liners for higher rod installations. Some of the darker colors can create a closed-in unlit feeling. Purchasing better quality liners gives you more generous sizing and better construction along with better mold resistance and clean ability. The clear liners are nice because they let in more light and let you see the outer shower curtain. Some people find they like using the liner alone, so they don’t feel closed in a small space. Many good shower curtain liners can be used by themselves.
