Selecting Plants for Your Garden
Most people are terrified of garden design and will ask, “What should I do? How do I garden? how do I mix colors?” If you can select your outfit in the morning or put makeup on, you can absolutely design a garden. This Home Depot video provides some basic tips:
All colors go together. Pick something you like – get an idea from a pillow, painting or dress, then interpret that color into flowers. Pick three things of that color.
Keep high water use and low water use plants together. Put high water use plants by the front door
Take care at your soil first. Add compost to sandy and treat clay soil with organic material, manure, and plant matter. Pick good plants.
To create your garden quickly, look for vigorous plants in larger sizes. You don’t save money with smaller plants; it’s basically the same per square foot. Larger plants will give your garden a head start. Buy gallon pots and hanging baskets (take off the hangers first) and put them into the soil.
