Updating a 1980’s Bathroom
This DIY Network video features a 1980’s bathroom upgrade. The homeowners started with painting, flooring and decorating during the first few months after moving in. As the master bath had no shower in addition to its outdated look, it became the target for a major remodeling project.
The bathroom renovation plan had a budget of $11,000 and included the following:
- Remove wallpaper
- Replace vinyl floor with tile
- Install a tub and sink
- Add a shower and fixtures
- Update the lighting
The homeowners started with the demolition and made an access panel for the tub. They kept the old linen closet and updated with paint and new hardware. Prepping the shower for tile and the remaining work was left to the pros.
The home was reassessed post renovation, and this remodel added $10,000 to the value of the home. The cost of the project was underestimated, however, and the final total ended up as $16,000, itemized as follows:
- Tile: $5,000
- Shower enclosure: $2,575
- Water heater: $1,850
- Vanity/sink: $556
- Jetted tub: $675
- Accessories: $500
- Plumbing and labor: $3,500
- Materials: $1,345
