When to Replace Your Water Heater

There are several warning signs that might be telling you it’s time for a new water heater. Learn when to replace your water heater in this Ace Hardware video:

Here are some common warning signs:

  • Water on the floor
  • Water at the top of the tank, especially where the cold water line comes in or the hot water line comes out
  • Snap, crackle and pop noise every time the water heater kicks on

These signs also go in concert with the age of the water heater. The natural average life of a water heater in the U.S. is about ten years. To determine the age of your water heater, look at the serial number; the first two digits represent the year it was made (e.g. 19 indicates the unit was built in 2019). If more than ten years have elapsed since that date and you’re getting all of these other warning signs, then it might be time for replacement.

Always remember that it’s cheaper to hire a plumber to come and change the water heater on your own terms rather than in an emergency situation when you need hot water immediately. A little planning can save you some money.
