How to Select and Install Wall Brackets

Using the right wall brackets and installing them correctly is critical, whether you’re hanging decorative shelving or a heavy duty storage system. Learn how to select and install wall brackets in this video by The Home Depot:

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • Shelf brackets
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter’s level
  • Tape measure
  • Stud finder
  • Drill and bits
  • Wood screws
  • Wall anchors
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer (optional)

1. Select brackets: If the load is particularly heavy, you’ll need larger brackets, and more then two. For heavy loads, decrease the spacing between brackets for additional support.

2. Determine location: Install as many wall studs as possible. This is crucial to support heavier loads. Many brackets include the necessary hanging hardware.

3. Select hardware: When installing a bracket into a stud, use a long wood screw for extra stability. If a stud is unavailable, install the appropriate anchors for your wall type and the weight of what you’re hanging. For masonry installation, use plastic concrete anchors and screws. For heavy loads, space brackets 16 inches.

4. Level bracket locations: Check that the bracket marks line up evenly using a level. If they do, use screws to make pilot holes.
For an extended shelf span, set a carpenter’s level on a 2×4 to ensure all bracket marks are even.

5. Install brackets: To secure the bracket, back the screws out and fasten the bracket to the wall. To avoid stripping the hole or screws, do not overtighten or use a high-speed drill.

You may need to tidy up the wall markings and clean up any dust from installation.
