Design Tips and Tricks for Home Interiors

Designer Jasmine Roth shares design tips and tricks for home interiors that she uses on almost every project in this HGTV video:

Keeping the number of colors to a minimum will make a space cohesive. Jasmine’s staple colors include a light gray, a good white, a dark red, brown or gray, and a pop of color.

A fireplace makes a great focal point in a room. You can paint the brick or add tile, wallpaper, stucco or a vintage mantel.

Cut the clutter. Don’t use anything that’s smaller than your head (or at least nothing smaller than your hand) when you’re dressing shelves or putting things on your coffee table. The more little things you have around your house, the more cluttered it feels. If you want to display small things, display them in groups of three with a bigger thing to anchor them.

Use various sizes of pattern and texture to make your space feel finished and welcoming. You don’t want everything to be super tiny prints because it will feel really busy, but on the other hand, if everything is solid colors, it will feel really boring. Layer area rugs and mix different types of pillows.

Add green plants to every single space to make it feel finished. Think about the size of the plant compared with your space and scale them accordingly. You don’t want a tiny cottage full of giant palm trees.

To make sure your design is finished, think of the room in vignettes, such as a fireplace. Is there enough going on that it feels finished? Think about adding a plant, family photo, something with color and something with texture. If it’s social media worthy, it’s probably done.

Add family photos to personalize a space and make it feel completed.
