How to Stripe Your Lawn

A striped lawn can be a major boost to your home’s curb appeal, and getting that professionally maintained look is easier than you might think. Learn how to stripe your lawn in this video by The Home Depot:

In addition to your lawn mower, lawn tractor or garden tractor, you will also need a striping kit or lawn mover to fit your mower or tractor. Always follow manufacturer guidelines when using striping kits or outdoor equipment. Striping works best on cool season grasses like rye, fescue and bluegrass.

Here are some mowing tips:

  • Don’t mow when the lawn is wet, as it flattens the grass and clogs the mower.
  • Keep the mower blade sharp for a clean cut and healthier grass.
  • For best results, keep your lawn between 2-1/2 and 4 inches tall.

1. Clear lawn: Before getting started, clear the lawn of toys, tools and any other items that could get caught up under your mower.

2. Mow a straight line: For a classic striped pattern, start by mowing parallel to a straight driveway or sidewalk.

3. Turn mower: At the end of the stripe, raise the deck to reposition the mower. Or leave the deck down and make a tight turn. Don’t turn so tightly that your mower tips over.

4. Mow in opposite direction: Mow a stripe in the opposite direction parallel to the first. Mow closely around trees and flower beds as needed.

5. Hide marks: If turn marks are noticeable, mow a final stripe along the perimeter of the lawn to hide them.
