A trellis keeps tomatoes off the ground, protecting them from pests and diseases. It can also boost the plant’s sun exposure and air circulation, which gives you more tomatoes at harvest. Learn how to trellis tomatoes in this video by The Home Depot:

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • Trellis
  • Twine
  • Pruners
  • Scissors
  • Garden Shears
  • Gloves

1. Prune: Make sure your plants are getting enough air. Use pruning shears to trim the leaves growing along the bottom of the tomato plant.

2. Install trellis: Trellises are offered in a variety of styles and sizes, with many made with mesh, wood or metal. Choose your trellis based on tomato varietal type. Install the trellis by pushing the stakes into the soil next to the plant’s main stem. Bear down on the trellis to make sure it is secure.

3. Tie vines to trellis: Tie your tomato plant to the trellis using pieces of thin rope or twine. Use biodegradable twine such as sisal or jute. Tie the plant in several places, leaving an inch or two of space between ties.
