How to Install Window Trim
Installing window trim gives your space a finished look, and it’s easy to do yourself. Learn how to install window trim in this video by The Home Depot:
You will need the following tools and materials:
- Trim boards
- Tape measure
- Speed square
- Pencil
- Miter saw
- Wood glue
- Paper towel/rags
- 1- and 2-inch brad nails
- Hammer or nailer
- Yardstick/long level
- Ear and eye protection
1. Measure and mark your reveal lines: Reveal lines should be 3/16 inch from the inside edge of the jamb. Do this on all sides so that you have a reference mark for positioning each piece of trim. A trim “reveal” hides dimensional discrepancies caused by house settling or wood shrinkage over time.
2. Cut and install top trim: To install the top piece, cut a 45 degree angle on the left side of the trim. Hold up in position at the reveal line, then mark where the opposite 45 degree angle will be located (Tip: Start with a board that’s a bit longer than the window is wide, so you don’t cut the piece too short; the shorter edges on the trim boards should meet the vertical reveal lines). After changing the direction of the saw blade, cut the right end to size. Once you’ve checked the joint for a good fit, secure the trim to the jamb using 1-inch brad nails in 6-inc increments. To fasten thicker portions of trim, use a 2-inch brad nail.
3. Cut and install vertical trim: To install both vertical trim boards, repeat the same process, but before nailing the pieces into place, apply wood glue at the corner joints. Wipe away excess glue from the corners while wet. Use 1-inch brads from the top and side to pin the pieces together.
4. Cut and install the bottom trim: For the bottom piece, use the same method as for the top piece, but keep the board at a block so you can test fit the angle and adjust if needed. Once you’ve achieved the perfect fit, secure the trim with brad nails and wood glue.
Finally, caulk, spackle and paint the trim as needed.
