Tips and Tricks for Beginning Gardeners
For a newbie, gardening can be challenging, but it is very rewarding once the crops come in. Get tips and tricks for beginning gardeners in this video by the Kinwoven Home:
1. Observe sunlight patterns in your gardening space. This will help you determine the best area for your plants based on their individual sunlight requirements.
2. Build a raised bed. A raised bed looks pretty and is better for the soil and drainage. It’s also better for the plants as well as for your back. Start small with one bed so that it’s manageable. Alternatively, you can grow plants in a wheelbarrow, which makes them easy to move around, or in containers.
3. Use healthy soil with a mix of organic soil and compost. If you see worms in your soil, it’s a good thing.
4. Plant things you love to eat. Radishes, kale, lettuce, arugula, rosemary and zucchini are easy herbs and veggies to start with.
5. Maintain your garden. Check your garden every few days and make sure you water the plants at the roots and not on the leaves. Water in the morning and in the afternoon. Trim off all debris and dead leaves.
6. Harvest your crops when ready. This way you will be eating herbs and veggies at their peak. When planting, put in seed markers so you will know what is planted where.
7. Use tools such as a knee pad, long gloves, hoe, rake, gardening trowel, and gardening scissors.
