Organic Modern Design

Organic modern design is about breaking clean lines with organic forms. Learn more about this style in this Build.com video:

Organic modern design is the fusion of mid-century design, farmhouse style, modern architecture and boho style. Some of the elements that you’ll see in organic modern are lots of plants, woven textures (especially in lights and rugs), a neutral palette (especially with flooring and furniture), and nice bright modern architecture and white walls which really brighten up the space.

There are a lot of things that can go into this look. You can start out in a farmhouse type setting or in a modernist building. It’s really about the objects that you’re bringing in to soften that look. For example, if you live on the coast and love that nautical feel, bringing in a found object like a ship’s wheel can really help break up the modern aesthetic and bring in some character. Or if you’re starting with a traditional kitchen with oak cabinets and a dark floor, you can really open up the room by painting the cabinets white and adding white oak flooring, and then incorporate the organic part of this look by bringing in some woven shades to replace the old pendants over the island and maybe replacing the stools at your island with something handcrafted or woven as well. There are lots of ways to get this look, but as long as you stay with a neutral color palette and you curate objects so you don’t verge on maximalism, you’re really nailing the look and getting a nice clean organic modern space.
