How to Combine Design Styles Like a Pro
What do you do if you have more than one decorating style or if the person you live with has a different style than you? How can you successfully mix styles? Learn about the seven top design style combinations and how to combine design styles like a pro in this video by The Kinwoven Home:
For any of these combinations, you can mix equal amounts of both styles in your decor or concentrate on one style while bringing in accents from the other style.
1. Farmhouse and Modern: Farmhouse style is cozy and rustic, while modern style is more sleek with straight lines. The modern elements elevate the rustic farmhouse style, so mixing these styles gives you a clean, streamlined, and cozy look. Keep your color palette neutral and bring in more wood accents and natural fibers for more of a farmhouse look, or bring in sleek black steel=type materials for more of a modern look.
2. Scandinavian and Mid-Century: These styles go well together as they are similar in their furniture shapes and styles. The Scandinavian style tends to be cozier, while mid-century leans into more colors and tends to be a bit funkier and more retro. For a balanced look, combine straight leg or peg leg furniture with organic elements like indoor plants, wood tones and natural fabrics in a neutral color palette. Use more retro shapes, arc floor lamps and bright jewel tone colors for a more mid-century look, or use a beige/gray/white color palette and light woods for a more Scandinavian look.
3. Scandinavian and Glam: The glam style is very luxurious and a bit more elevated and more sparkly, with a bright color palette, more pinks, and glittery or mirrored finishes. In contrast, the Scandinavian style has more woods, organic finishes, and cozier textures in a neutral color palette. Both styles have similar elements like faux fur and velvety textures. A perfect harmony of these style would be using wood furniture with a light pink and black color palette or using glam style furniture and finishes with a neutral color palette and chunky wool knit blankets.
4. Mid-Century and Boho: Color is the reason these styles go well together. The Bohemian style has a color palette that can go wild, with layered rugs, lots of pom-poms, poufs and zigzag patterns, while the mid-century style has rich honey color woods, greens, yellows, oranges and jewel tones. Combine the two styles by using the bright color palette, mid-century furniture, art work and a lot of plants.
5. Coastal and Farmhouse: Farmhouse style is cozy, while coastal style is serene. Bring these styles together with a beautiful sea blue and sand color palette, reclaimed wood, white wood, and touches of texture. Use subway tile, shiplap, old crates, bottles and signs together with shells and rope.
6. Glam and Traditional: These styles work well together as they’re all about the detail – carved rounded edges, vintage and Victorian style detailing and luxurious velvety textures and pattern. Traditional has a darker color palette, with more floral and striped prints, while glam has a lighter color palette with pinks and blacks. To combine these styles, pick one of the two color palettes, then pick some of the decor and texture elements of the other style.
7. Contemporary and Minimalism: These styles are all about function in a monochrome color palette and share the philosophy “less is more” with a clean, streamlined and sometimes cooler vibe and clean and open floor plans. Lots of concrete and stone are used. There is a little more coziness on the minimalist side than on the contemporary side which tends toward color blocking and geometric shapes.
