How to Install Window Blinds

No matter how much you love the sunlight or the view, you will still need a way to cover and control your windows. Window blinds are the simplest way to add privacy to any room and give you the ability to moderate the amount of light that enters the room. Learn how to install window blinds in this HGTV video:

You will need the following tools and materials: screwdriver, drill, drill bits, a 2-ft level, tape measure, and pencil.

For a similar look to shutters without the high price tag, many renters and homeowners choose blinds. Blinds cover the window with vertical or horizontal slats like shutter louvers and can be fully opened for more light to enter a room. You need to pick the window blind material you want first based on your price range and how you want your blinds to open. Real wood blinds are more expensive than faux wood and vinyl. Faux wood is more durable than vinyl.

In order to measure for and purchase your window blinds, you will first need to determine where on the window you would like them installed. Blinds can be installed above the window trim, directly onto the window trim, or inside the window casing. The blinds featured in this video will be installed inside the window casing.

Window blinds come in a few general widths and can be cut to size at the store. Measure at the top, middle and bottom of the window. Use the shortest measurement as your window width. Now measure the height on the left, middle and right side. Use the longest measurement as your window height. Give your window height and width measurements to the window blind sales person and have them custom cut your blinds.

Window blinds are attached to the window casing or wall using a few brackets. Generally the blinds will slide into the brackets once the brackets are attached. Make sure your entire blinds, including the brackets, fit into your window.

  • Locate the brackets locations on the top of the inner window casing and about 1/2 inch away from the window pane.
  • Hold each bracket in place and mark the screw holes with a sharp pencil.
  • Use a drill and a drill bit that is smaller than your screws to drill pilot holes for each of your brackets.
  • Move your brackets into place and secure them using the screws provided.
  • Once all brackets are securely attached to the window casing, place your blinds into the brackets and lock them into place.
  • Install the trim. The trim piece is held in place using some small plastic clips included in your blinds packaging. Snap the plastic clips onto the top of your blinds at the left and right then, snap your trim piece into place.
