How to Choose a Color Palette for Your Home

Having the right color palette will give your home a beautifully decorated and cohesive look. Learn how to choose a color palette for your home in this video by The Kinwoven Home:

1. Determine what you are stuck with. This could be hand-me-down furniture, any furniture you’re invested in or any architectural features. You’ll need to incorporate those colors and bring in supporting colors to make them look good. If you are starting fresh, you can skip this step.

2. Find an inspirational piece like artwork, a rug, or another decor element that means a lot to you. Identify the colors that are in that piece and let them guide you in the colors that you select. This ensures that you can use that piece in your space, and it also makes the whole color selection process easier.

3. Choose a neutral color as your base. As a rule of thumb, your color palette should be 60% base color, 30% secondary color, and 10% accent color. The neutral base color can be any shade of cream, tan, white or gray; these are timeless colors that can be used in any home. Make sure your chosen neutral goes with the pieces you already have. This base color will go on the walls and in your largest furniture items and rugs.

4. Choose a secondary color. Depending on the room, you can use this color in your larger furniture pieces and decor items.

5. Choose an accent color. This color will be a fun little pop throughout your home that will tie everything together. You can use different shades of this color in chairs, pillow, artwork and decor items.

6. Incorporate your color palette in multiple different ways throughout your home. Blending colors in different pieces will make your space feel cohesive and beautifully done.
