How to Transplant a Tree or Shrub

Do you have a poorly positioned tree or shrub in your yard? With the right tools, you can move it to a new location. Learn how to transplant a tree or shrub in this HGTV video:

Fall is the best season to transplant. Start by identifying a spot that has room for the tree or shrub to grow.

1. Soak the roots.

2. Dig a hole in the new location; it should be wider, not deeper.

3. Use a sharp shovel to dig up the tree or shrub. Dig in a circle until the plant moves easily.

4. Move the plant to the new location (avoid pulling on the trunk).

5. Position the plant in the hole.

6. Add compost.

7. Water the roots.

8. Spread mulch to help the plant retain moisture. Keep the mulch away from the trunk.
