Heaters for Homes

Heaters for homes range from portable and permanent electric heaters to wood-burning and pellet stoves to natural gas and liquid propane gas heaters. Whether you are looking for an energy-efficient heating solution, a supplemental heat source or just a source of emergency heat during power outages, you will be able to find a heater that meets your needs.

Wood heaters for homes come in pellet stoves and traditional wood burning stoves. Pellet stoves are designed to burn manufactured hardwood pellets. They produce a large amount of heat but only a small amount of ash. Traditional wood stoves generate heat by burning 18- to 22-inch logs. A stove with an ash drawer will facilitate cleaning. If you want to enjoy watching the flames, you can get a stove with a glass front.

Gas heaters include gas logs and freestanding and wall-mounted units. Vented logs will require a vent stack to the outside of your home. Vent-free heaters do not require venting and can be installed anywhere in your home. Gas heaters come in liquid propane and natural gas units; the type of fuel is primarily determined by availability in your area.

Portable electric heaters run anywhere in size from personal tabletop units to large heaters designed to warm entire rooms. Heat is generated when electricity is supplied to a wire ribbon strip or resistance coil. Some personal heaters may oscillate or have blowers and can project heat quickly over a larger areas; some have ceramic casings that hold more heat for longer periods. Large heaters may be permanently filled with oil, allowing them to hold and radiate heat longer and making them more energy efficient.

Permanent electric heaters are available as baseboard heaters, fireplaces and wall-mounted heaters. Like personal heaters, baseboard heaters have a resistance coil, but baseboard heaters can be wired to a wall-mounted thermostat and are much larger and are more efficient in providing heat. Wall-mounted heaters are small rectangular boxes with a built-in fan that moves heated air throughout the room.

Electric fireplaces combine the ambience of a wood-burning fireplace with the convenience of electric heat and come with mantels and hearths. This product video shows the wide range of styles and finishes available for Dimplex Symphony Electric Fireplaces:

When considering a heater for your home, you should also look for adjustable features such as variable settings that will allow you to save energy and safety features such as anti-tipping devices, heat guards and automatic shutoffs. You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and use of any heating unit.
