How to Paint a Galaxy Ceiling

A galaxy ceiling is a great way to bring some fun into a room and give it a truly “out of this world” look. Learn how to paint a galaxy ceiling in this Ace Hardware video:

It all starts with the prep work, so make sure you clear out the room and get the walls ready for the paint job. One of the tricks of the trade is to actually bring the ceiling color down onto the wall, so laying that out properly is part of the process.

Prep the room: Make sure you cover the floor with a drop cloth. Remove cobwebs and dust with a broom. Fill any holes with lightweight spackle.

Tape the room: To get the galaxy effect on the ceiling, you want to bring the color down onto the wall. The line would typically be 6-8 inches, but you always want to look for some cues that may be in the room already, like the top of the door trim or the top of a window. Using a laser level and a pencil, draw the line and put down the painters tape.

Apply paint and primer: Apply a “paint and primer in one” with a flat finish. Cut around the tape joint and in the corners with a brush, then follow up with a roller to cover the larger areas of the ceiling. Let dry for several hours, then apply a second coat. When the second coat is dry, peel off the tape and start with the effects to create the galaxy ceiling. You can flick paint with a paintbrush using glow-in-the-dark paint, apply glow-in-the-dark stickers and stars, or use a white paint pen.
