How to Paint a Kitchen Backsplash
Replacing a backsplash can be a costly project, but did you know you can paint it? Learn how to paint a kitchen backsplash in this Ace Hardware video:
In this video, the steps taken for this DIY project are suitable for the backsplash material, which is tile. Depending on what your backsplash is made of, it’s a good idea to take a picture of it and go to our local hardware or home improvement store and talk to someone in the paint department to make sure you get the materials and products you need to get terrific results.
Start by prepping the space. Put some tarps down, take off any electrical switch plates and outlet covers, and apply tape to the countertop edges. Using a damp sponge, clean the backsplash with trisodium phosphate (TSP). Make sure you wear gloves, safety goggles and a mask for this step. Once done, clean and rinse the backsplash with clear water. If your backsplash is tile, you can use a medium grit sanding sponge to lightly scuff the surface before applying the primer and paint.
Apply the primer, getting into the grout lines, then let dry for two hours. Choose a semi-gloss paint that’s suitable for cabinets, doors or trim. Apply the paint using a 3/8-inch nap, roller, again getting into the grout lines and making sure you don’t get any drips. Apply two coats, waiting 2-4 hours before the second coat.
