Getting Started
Start by making a general plan. Measure the backyard, sketch the layout or new design on graph paper, noting shady and full sun areas. Once you’ve finalized your design, make a shopping list (this includes plants, outdoor furniture and accessories, and garden supplies and tools).
Creative Ideas
- Walkways and paths: Divide large areas into easily managed sections. Add architectural interest and create the illusion of larger space. Use pavers, crushed rock, bricks, stone or mulch.
- Water features: A water feature provides an inviting focal point that’s relaxing and peaceful and also attracts birds and pollinators.
- Screens: You’ll want to hide unattractive elements like AC units and electric meters. Disguise them with trees, shrubs or a man-made screen or fence which can also provide structural interest.
- Plants: Perennials or native plants help soften the hard edges of decks or other structures.
- Entryway: A gate or arbor welcomes guest and makes an artistic as well as functional statement.
- Fire pit: Extend your outdoor living area and create a cozy gathering space with a fire pit. It can be stationary (built from pavers or stone) or mobile (made of prefabricated metal).
- Add shade: Create a crowd-pleasing entertainment area with a pergola or pavilion.
- Seating: Outdoor furniture comes in many styles and colors. Create several seating areas in your landscape plans.
- Lighting: Enhance security and visual appeal with lighting. It also allows use of your backyard after sunset.
- Vegetable Garden: Plant your own herbs and vegetables in a raised garden bed. Create a border with edging, stone, pavers or fence. A trellis or obelisk adds function and beauty.
