How to Paint Wood Paneling

If you have a room with dark wood paneling, you can brighten it up by painting it instead of removing it. This DIY project is an easy and inexpensive makeover. Learn how to paint wood paneling in this Ace Hardware video:

How your prep your paneling for painting is pretty consistent regardless of the type of paneling you have. Remove anything hanging on the wall, including any nails and screws, and the electrical trim plates.

Take a sanding sponge and just lightly knock down a little bit of the sheen. This will help the primer adhere better.

Tape off the areas where you don’t want paint, such as the ceiling and floor, using painter’s tape. Use an old dry brush to clean off any dirt or debris on the floor before taping.

Apply an oil-based primer. Use your brush to fill in the grooves, then come back with a roller and roll out over the flat portions. Touch up later as needed.

Before moving on to the finish paint, use a little caulk or spackle to fill in any holes made by nails or screws. Use your fingertip rather than a putty knife as it will take the graining away.

Once the primer is dry, apply a latex paint and primer. Similarly, use your brush to fill in the grooves, then come back with a 1/2-inch nap roller. Two coats are recommended.
